“Being a Muslim Southeast Asian woman in the American music industry, I’ve gone through every single thing: being put in the Muslim box, or the hijabi box, or the Southeast Asian box, or the ‘we don’t know where to place her’ box. But I’ve managed to find my people, those who understand what I’m doing and listen to my music,” muses Yuna.
Since the launch of Vogue in Singapore last September, we’ve had the pleasure of having some of the world’s best models front our book. But beyond being a fashion authority, Vogue is also a reflection of our times. With the imminent release of her fifth international studio album this year, we were honoured to have trailblazing singer-songwriter Yuna for our ‘Rhythm’ issue. The most successful Malaysian singer in history—with collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Usher and Tyler, the Creator—Yuna brings joy to our pages as she discusses her rise to superstardom, meaningful music and her unwavering faith.
Shot post-lockdown in Malaysia, photographer Chee Wei brought a fantastical gaze to his muse, with a psychedelic, dreamy air to the images inspired by music festivals such as Coachella. Yuna wears a vibrant Khoon Hooi ensemble on the cover, alongside a selection of stunning jewellery from Cartier.
Find your own beat as you thumb through the pages of our latest issue, which will feature thought-provoking stories on topics such as reconfiguring our rituals to a new normal, creating a new vision for fashion and rethinking the cadence of life.
